The NATO Secretary-General, Anders Fogh Rasmussen, says that information points to President Assad's forces being responsible for the use of chemical weapons in Syria.
He was speaking after a meeting of NATO ambassadors in Brussels to discuss the situation in Syria and in particular the alleged attack near Damascus last week that killed hundreds:
"The Syrian regime maintains custody of stockpiles of chemical weapons. Information from a wide variety of sources points to the regime as responsible for the use of chemical weapons in these attacks. There is a clear breach of long-standing international norms and practice," he said.
Britain's National Security Council unanimously backed action against Syria in response to a suspected chemical weapons attack, Prime Minister David Cameron said on Wednesday, a day after he set out the case for a targeted military strike.
Ali Larijani, Iran's parliament speaker, reacted to the threat of military action:
"The result of such an unwise move will be regional chaos and the fire will engulf the credulous countries of the region," he said.
Israeli media reports that Syrian officials are threatening retaliation against Israel for any Western attack. Israel is deploying all of its missile defences as a precaution.
Syria has long demanded an Israeli withdrawal from the strategic Golan Heights land that Israel captured in the 1967 war.
