This comes from the recent DVD box set release. The theme music appears to have been composed by W.Michael Lewis and Laurin Rinder. Season 1 (1976) of theme song for In Search Of... consisted of synth leads and rhythm, some wha guitar, congas, and hi hat. 2:11 The note that portmanteaus up right before the 2nd measure of the closing Season 1 theme really cracks me up for some reason. 2:40 Sometime during Season 2 the producers appear to have been allowed to spend more on the opening theme replacing the synths with a string and horn section, but still one mono synth/therimin note following along at the 3rd measure. The synth version sound creepier and may be the version most people remember. 1:19 Sometimes, just after the opening credits and theme music, a thesis was proposed, and this would then transition back to the music and red titles with a disclaimer "This program is based on theory and conjecture...". Possibly, if the episode was full of program, the opening title music would be shortened and then stop right to the disclaimer. 0:00 Many of the first seasons episodes had this dissonant piano-piano-synth, piano-piano-synth chord stab while showing the episode's title. I remember this sounded terrifying to my 6-year-old self. 1:37 At the end of a few of the Season 1 episodes Nimoy's voiceover would talk about the various topics shown in future shows (In Search Of.. cameras travel the world seeking answers...). This might have been used as filler since it was not used consistently in every episode and was not used in future seasons past season 2. The theme music at the closing credits is at slightly slower tempo than the opening.
