Do you ever go to a place that everyone else loves but you just don't connect with it in that way? I think they call it Paris syndrome.
I felt that way about the Philippines the first time I went in 2013. I just didn't love it, but I could never really articulate why.
I realized that if I couldn't come up with a good reason, it meant that perhaps it was ME who was the problem the first time around. I knew that I had to return to see if that was the case.
I'm so happy to say that this time around, I had a change of heart. The locals in the Philippines were so friendly, that even when things went wrong like they did in Siargao, it turned out to be a beautiful experience. I am thankful that I got to go back and have a change of heart, but it felt dishonest not to talk about the experience I went into this Philippines trip with, and I wanted to share the truth with you!
Now I know, this is a place I'll keep coming back to. A BIG THANK YOU to all of the amazing locals who turned my impressions around this time.
