How To Spin Wool From Sheep To Sweater

Link mother was very kind and even took the time to demonstrate how sheep wool is processed from sheep to sweater. Links parents brought out all sorts of equipment and wool samples for me to see. There was a whole bag of wool from a sheep. There were various samples of sheep wool from course to fine. It is amazing how fine sheep wool can actually be. Some of the hairs are so fine that you can hardly see a single strand. Its no wonder this stuff holds together so well. Rough fresh cut sheep wool is dirty and very oily. The dirt has to be combed out and sometimes the wool gets washed as well. The oil is lanolin which is used in hand creme and beauty products. If you rub fresh wool between your fingers it is very oily and leaves a thick residue on your fingers. This is the lanolin. There is a device which combs the wool and forms it into larger sheets which you pull off and then spin into yarn. The spinner is a simple device actually. You pump the foot pedal slowly and gently feed the wool into the machine. It twists the wool strands and feeds it onto a spool. You can later feed in two strands onto an empty spool to get yarn for knitting sweaters. I am amazed at the quality of the products and the simplicity of the machines. Sheep are often kept around Australia. You can see the pastures sprawling for miles in all directions. Many people keep sheep as a hobby but some big businesses thrive off it. Each sheep brings about $30 per year before costs. Not a lot of profit. But if you have many thousands of sheep then it adds up nicely. Thank you very much for the demonstration.
