For other videos, please check out ForB YouTube Channel. ⇒http://www.youtube.com/user/ForBenglish ★Transcript Hello, everyone. Welcome to ForB's English lesson video. I'm Kevin and today we are going to talk about the word "really." Now, this is a very common word in English but it can be difficult for non-native speakers to say. So, first let's work on the beginning sound, the "R" sound. Remember with the "R" sound our tongue is pulled back in our mouth and isn't touching anything. "R, R." Mouth is very relaxed. For the vowel sound, there are actually two ways of pronouncing it. First, let's focus on the common dictionary sound. The "Rii" sound. So, very hard "ii" sound. When we combine this, our tongue will move from the middle of our mouth and drop for the "ii" sound behind our bottom teeth. "Rii, rii, rii." Please repeat after me. "Rii, rii " So, again the mouth is relaxed and widens a little for the "ii" sound. "Rii." Our second sound is the "lii" sound. We'll start with a hard "L" sound. Tongue is up touching the top of our mouth right behind our top teeth. "L, L." Then for the "ii" sound, drop sharply. "Lii, lii". Repeat after me. "lii, lii." OK? Let's try to combine those sounds. "Really, really, really, really, really, really." Repeat after me. "Really, really, really." Did you get it? Let's try three times fast. "Really, really, really." OK! Now, as I mentioned, another way to pronounce this "ii" sound is "e." So, make a "re" sound. It's very similar to the sound of the color "red." The "re." So, "R" sound is the same. Tongue back, mouth very relaxed. But, for the "e" sound, our tongue doesn't move so much. But, our jaw will drop so your mouth will be bigger. "Re, re". Please notice the difference "rii, re, rii, re." So, let's practice that second style. "Re, re." Please repeat. "Re, re." The "lii" sound is the same as before. Again, tongue up. Then drop sharply. "Lii, lii." Repeat after me. "Lii, lii." Now, let's combine them. "Re lii, re lii, really, really, really." Repeat after me. "Really, really." Can you get it? Three times. "Really, really, really." OK. Very good. Now, "really, really." Both ways are OK. I must admit for me and I think many Americans, we say the second way more often but you will hear really too. Hmm. Whichever way you feel comfortable with is fine. Now as I mentioned at the start of our video, "really" is a very common word in English but we use it in different ways. One common way to use "really" is to make something stronger. So, for example. Today is really hot. In this situation the really has a very strong tone because we want to emphasize how hot it is. "Really hot, really hot." However, a second way to use "really" is to show surprise or that you don't believe someone. This has a very different tone of voice. Much like a question. So, for example. My friend says, "Kevin, today I won ten million dollars." "Really? Really?" So my tone very different. I don't believe my friend. So let's practice those two tones. First very strong. "Really hot, really hot." One more time. "Really hot." OK. Good. Now the second way to show you don't believe someone. "Really? Really?" One more time. "Really?" Alright. Let's practice. "Guess what? Today I won ten million dollars!" OK. Did you believe me? It's not true. And how is the temperature today? Is it really hot? Or maybe really cold. Well, I hope you enjoyed our video today and that it taught you something. Don't forget we have many other videos on English topics. Please check out our blog or web site if you're interested.
