Challah is delicious braided bread. It is soft, slightly sweet. It is perfect for making French toast, bread pudding or simply served with a raw honey, your favorite jelly or warm milk. Challah bread is very flavorful without being overly complicated or difficult to make. INGRIDIENTS: For the Loaf: - 1 1/3 Cup warm water -14g Dry yeast or 30g fresh - 80g sugar - 250g Flour - 250g Bread flour - 1/2 Tsp salt - 1 Egg - 3 Tbsp butter CRUMB: - 1 Tbsp Butter - 1 Tbsp Flour - 3-4 Tbsp Confectioners’ sugar Plus 1 Egg for brushing loaf, optional brown sugar for additional topping RECIPE: 1) In a large bowl combine together dry or fresh yeast, warm water, milk and whisk. Add Flour, salt, egg. Mix with your clean hand or stand mixer just to combine all the ingredients. 2) Transfer sticky dough on lightly flour surface, Add soft butter. Using the palms and the heels of your hands start kneading dough until it turns completely smooth for about 10 min. Try not to use any extra flour during the kneading. 3) Place clean dough in a greased bowl, cover with clean kitchen towel, and place it in a warm area in the kitchen. Let it rise for 1 and ½ hour or until it has tripled inside. 4) For the crumbs, melt butter, add flour and powdered sugar. Mix until you form large crumbs. Remove from the heat, cover, let it cool down and dry. 5) Return your ready dough into a lightly floured surface, and fold over a few times to get rid of any extra air. Cut the dough into 4 pieces. Roll each piece into snake shape about 15 – 18 inches long. (Or 3 long pieces, if you want to do normal braid) 6) Lay 4 strands, so the ends are pointed toward you. And pinch the farthest ends together. Then start braid with the ends that are farthest away and braid toward you. Take the left hand and move it to the right over two strands, take the right hand stand and move to the left over two strands. Repeat until the loaf is done. 7) Pinch the end or twist under the bread. Place the bread on a baking sheet line with parchment paper, cover with kitchen towel, and let it rise for 30 min. 8) Crack and whisk one egg, add vanilla extract and mix. Brush the loaf with an egg, sprinkle brown sugar, and homemade crumbs. 9) Bake in preheated oven at 350 for 30-35 min. Remember to cool down the bread before slicing. Enjoy!
