Using a band, or "Banding" is the fastest, easiest and most humane way to "fix" or "castrate" a male Billy Goat Kid. This is a tool you can buy at the feed store, and, if your comfortable, can even do it yourself. We use an Elastrator banding tool and a small green "Cheerio" size rubber bands. Male Whethers (fixed goats) make the sweetest pets and companion goats, as they have a great temperament, and do not smell, because these guys do not have the same desire to breed or compete with other bucks. This is a very raw natural video, meant to be educational. This is Narrated by my 9 year old daughter, Summer, who wants to be a vet when she grows up (so be nice). I think she did a pretty good job at explaining what to do. We wanted to show you that banding isn't anything to be afraid of, even for a kid. The goat will probably scream, or act "dead" like ours, but they are OK. It is more scary and uncomfortable being held down, than the actual process... At least, that's what HE said. LOL Its easier, and more soothing to the goat, to have two people helping, and less stressful on you. one person can hold or talk softly to the goat, while the other puts that teeny tiny rubber band around his testicles. The less stress you can put on the goat, the better. We have neutered goats at various ages, as long as the ball sack and testis still fit in the banding Elastrator tool. The smaller the better though. If you castrate them too old, they may have already gotten a good dose of testosterone through their body, and could end up looking like a big Billy that can't reproduce... unless that is what you wanted? Banding them earlier makes them smaller and more friendly goats- better pets. Basically the same temperament as a female. Either way you cut it... I hope you enjoyed our video on how and why to neuter fix castrate baby Billy buck kid wether goat to make them better pets. Also check out our website GoatYoga.com
Here is the caveat ...I have had goats for 18 years and never have had a problem with banding, but I am not a Veterinarian Expert. We raise goats in Arizona as our beloved fun pets, playmates, friends for my kids, efficient green lawnmowers, and yoga only... not food! So I actually love each and every one of them individually and care for their wellbeing. The band only bothers them for that moment... once they walk off, they are fine. Thats just what he told me from his personal experience, I've never had it done before. Your goat may not be as tough as mine though. He has a high pain tolerance level. Happy Banding!
