House of Caroline Doty, 70 Phillips Beach Ave, Swampscott, Mass.

This long, beach-front house was torn down in the mid-1990s. Two new houses now stand there on separate lots. This video provides the backstory on those two lots and on the land across the street, which Caroline also owned when it was vacant. She bought that vacant lot for under $5k in the '40s, and it was sold for $400k. Her husband Lawrence was a terrific farmer, and he grew Concord grapes, blueberries, rhubarb, asparagus, pears, and corn there. The destruction along Phillips Beach from the Blizzard of 1978 is also shown in this.
