Air raid sirens also sounded in Haifa, Israel's third-largest city, but no strikes were reported. Hezbollah has fired hundreds of rockets at northern Israeli towns from north of the Lebanese border, killing 16 civilians and forcing hundreds of thousands of Israelis to repeatedly flee into bunkers. Experts have disputed claims from Hezbollah's leader, Sheik Hassan Nasrallah, who has said his group has more than 12,000 rockets. But other estimates suggest that the supply of rockets rose to 10,000 this year. That includes some Iranian-made rockets with a range of perhaps as much as 45 miles (72 kilometres), but the vast majority - the Katyusha-type rockets - have a range of less than 20 miles (32 kilometres). Israel says Hezbollah has missiles and rockets that can go much farther. Israel started its offensive when Hezbollah guerrillas captured two Israeli soldiers in a cross-border raid on July 12. Israeli troops took control of a village just across the Lebanese border on Saturday after the area was pounded by bombs and artillery through the night.
