Helping Wildlife Cross the Road: The First Spring

It can take years for wildlife to adapt to new crossing structures like this one in Kootenay National Park. Yet the first spring after it opened we spotted this... the very first bear! We were also excited to see a lot of this family over the winter: http://ow.ly/G3IFZ Especially after having watched the construction process with anticipation: http://ow.ly/G3IMk Remote cameras positioned on either side of each crossing structure help us see which animals are using the underpasses and how often. Radio-collars on white-tailed deer, the species involved most often in highway collisions, will also help us determine whether deer may avoid or select the structures and how they use the rest of the landscape.
