First update of paper 1895 Nagant Revolver with closeup of mechanical internals to show trigger, cylinder hand, hammer and cam that pushes the cylinder forward to force the mouth of the cartridge into the barrel to create a gas seal. It is still a little rough but at this point most of the work will be fine-tuning the action to time it correctly. Sometimes it engages perfectly and cams the cylinder forward in sync with the barrel, sometimes it is slightly off. Cutting slots in the cylinder for the trigger to lock up with should resolve this issue so each shot is in sync with the barrel. If you own a Nagant you will recognize I made a few changes to the internal design but it does the same thing.
It would actually be easier to make a regular double action revolver without a camming cylinder, but because we're talking about something made from paper, trying to shoot it if the timing wasn't exact would mean the round could hit the rear of the barrel and blow the frame out. Knowing that each shot would have to have the cartridge case lined up in the barrel will make it safer to shoot.
In terms of materials, I incorporated paper clay mixed with elmer's glue into some of the design, particularly the cylinder and a few detail pieces where checkering or other detailing is required. The paper clay is very durable when mixed with glue, but brittle otherwise with a texture similar to plaster.
I also used some very thin aluminum to reinforce my internal pieces such as trigger, hammer and cam since spring pressures would have eventually destroyed pure paper pieces and this was a problem I had with my 1911 build.
