Halberstadt CL.II First Look - IL-2 Flying Circus

The Halberstadt CL.II was a German two seater aircraft that excelled in close air support and was also a fairly good escort fighter for larger and slower machines. THe armermentr of this machine consisted of a single 7.92mm forward firing machine gun. The same gun was fitted in the gunner position providing an excellent field of fire. To fulfill the ground attack roll the aircraft could carry quite a heavy bomb load, 150 KG. . The CL.II was also used as an escort fighter. It’s excellent climb rate and good maneuverability were very appealing to the pilots and the defensive gunners proved quite effective against single engine fighters. In august 1917 the aircraft began to arrive to the front lines in effective numbers in a matter of weeks it proved itself to be one valuable machine. Some 900 of these aircraft were built during the great war. It continued to serve in other countries such as Poland and Lithuania after the war.
