Grandes études de Paganini, No. 6: "Theme and Variations" in A minor, composed by Franz Liszt in 1838 and revised in 1851, is among the most technically demanding works in the piano literature. Performed by Evan Chow, age 17, on May 14, 2011. As a young man, Franz Liszt was so impressed by Paganini's legendary technical skills that he wrote several pieces of music based on Paganini's own compositions. Paganini's 24 Caprices for Solo Violin, Op. 1 was the inspiration for all but one of Liszt's formidable Transcendental Études. Liszt's étude no. 6, played here, was based on Paganini's 24th caprice. © 2011 Evan Chow.
