They are caused by the Human Papilloma Virus that causes the keratin in the skin to grow too much, producing a hard textured wart. The human wart virus is extremely contagious, and skin-to-skin contact or shared use of clothes or towels can easily spread the virus. Though warts will often clear up of their own accord, treatment can accelerate the process and rid sufferers of these unsightly lumps.
