This Mini Horse is learning to steer while girl rides her.
Miniature horses unfortunately shouldn't be broke by mini humans, by that I mean children. Unless you are an irresponsible adult and put kids on an unbroken miniature horse, I guess you can. Mini horses like any horse can be totally unpredictable and cause serious injury. This rider is a professional jockey and makes a living breaking and riding horses. These horses need to be dead quiet if you plan on riding small children on their back. There should be no trotting or galloping these little guys at this stage with a rider in the 110 lb. range and once they are quiet enough to put an experienced youth or child on, they can start trotting and galloping. This is a method I recommend and prefer, but it's not always done this way. They are many different techniques and opinions on breaking horses and miniature horses so find the one that's safe and best for you, rider and trainer.
I added this text in response to all the misinformed people who leave negative comments on videos of this type. All opinions are welcome and we do appreciate even the nastiest comments because it starts a dialog between people who are knowledgeable in this field and people who are just outside observing what may be considered cruel or abusive to animals and in this case, the mini horse or horses. Every aspect of equine sporting or even pleasure could be considered cruel once a metal bit is placed in their mouth (think about it). What about strapping a saddle (usually a cheap one that was not designed or fitted specifically for that horse) to the horse and riding him around while pulling his head in different directions to make him go, while kicking or even spurring or whipping him? Isn't that cruel if you think about? When put that way, riding a horse seems pretty abusive in the first place, but people pick and choose what is and what is not cruel without actually thinking how hypocritical they might be. Oh, and the reason the guy was saying "whip him" is because he was making fun of a video we saw on YouTube of a pony bucking a trainer off while the owner, with a very thick middle eastern accent, yelled "whip him, whip him". Here is the video if you were wondering http://youtu.be/G_t01lWakks
Equine Note:
"Breaking horses" is also called "colt starting" by hobbiest and you probably should not take advice from anyone using the term, colt starting. A colt refers to an intact male horse, 4 years and younger, at least in the professional world of equine sports. If you have a filly or a mare that needs breaking, you would be out of luck with a "colt starter".
Also, miniature horses are sometimes referred to as miniature ponies. A pony is a horse measuring 14 1/2 (14 2") (4" equals 1 hand), but is not considered miniature horse. There is no such thing as a miniature pony since the word pony describes a small horse. The mini horse is bred this way through design and is a different breed all together.
