(24 Jun 2019) Germany appeared cool on Monday toward US talk of building a global coalition against Iran, saying that its top priority was de-escalating tensions in the region as it tried to salvage the 2015 nuclear deal with Tehran.
US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said as he headed for the Middle East on Sunday that he would discuss "how we can build out a global coalition" against Tehran that also includes Asia and Europe.
German Foreign Ministry spokesman Christofer Burger said on Monday that Berlin's approach towards Iran differed to that of the US.
"We see the JCPOA JCPOA (Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action or nuclear deal) as the basis for solving these problems," Burger told reporters at a briefing.
Germany, France and Britain, as well as Russia and China, remain part of the nuclear deal that US President Donald Trump's administration abandoned last year (2018).
