It is a Tactical TRAINING watch. It is perfect for drill days, FTXs, civilian life. But I won’t recommend it for use in the sandbox. In that scenario I would recommend the all so popular Garmin Foretrex 401. The battery life is quite great which surprised me, and is very Watch only mode: 5 weeks Watch and sensor mode: 3 weeks GPS activated: 50 hours Speaking of the GPS, it is extremely finicky constantly making minute adjustments which when overlayed on a map makes the route extremely inaccurate. However when simply being guided by the marker system rather than the map, during my land nav I didn’t have a problem. The TrackBak feature is quite helpful too, which helped guide me back to the TOC real fast. I found the menu quite layered. But in a way that helps once you figure out where everything is. This is why I wish a more detailed manual was included rather than just a quick start up manual. After 30 minutes of playing with it however you become proficient enough with it to accomplish your mission. The curved mineral glass lens was a great idea, and can be appreciated that Garmin would be considerate enough to create this. They show their forward thinking with making the backlighting compatible with NVGs so they won’t flare. On first impression I found the bulk of the watch too much, but within a day I gained an appreciation for it. They purposely added weight in order to make it feel more robust. My wrist is only average in size and yet it sits comfortably. The buttons on the watch have great play on them, yet feel firm. However if surrounded by sand I feel that this would be the weakest point. It even says not to press the buttons while underwater, however I find this ironic with a “man-overboard” feature. The Tactix I will say is one of the best multi-sensor GPS watches on the market, and for its pricetag it definitely better be. Overall I think the watch serves as a great heavy duty training tool but keep the heavy abuse down range work to the foretrex 401. Which is 75% cheaper and offers a lot of the same tools. www.military-life.tumblr.com [email protected]
