What trail should I hike? This depends on your hiking level! For as easy hike, stick with the Observation Trail. For a moderately difficult hike, check out Indian Point/Backpackers Trail and for a rugged more advanced hiking experience, Anvil Rock trailhead into the Wilderness Area offers miles upon miles of trails. 2. Where can I get maps and information? I suggest visiting Shawnee National Forest offices in Harrisburg or Vienna for maps (many which are free) and important infomation concerning Garden of the Gods hiking and other southern Illinois and Shawnee National Forest locations. 3. Can I take disposable containers on the Observation Trail? NO! This is really important, too! No disposable containers are allowed on the Observation Trail. Doing so can result in a pretty hefty fine. Please don't litter. I've participating in trash cleanups there and we've had to pick up used needles, diapers and used toilet paper. Imagine if that trash was dumped in your own yard. Please help us keep Garden of the Gods and Shawnee National Forest clean by packing out what you pack in! 4. Safety Information: Warning - Dangerous areas exist within Garden of the Gods. People have died from falls and other injuries while visiting this area. Please exercise caution at all times, put safety first and watch children and loved ones. Leave with happy memories not serious injuries.
