Lee Prewitt (Montgomery Clift) arrives at his barracks in Pearl Harbor and once there, his new commander, Sgt. Milton Warden (Burt Lancaster), promises that if he boxes on the company team he will be given the job of bugler, which he very much wants. But Prew refuses, as he is haunted by prior experiences in the ring. Feeling slighted, Sgt. Warden gives Prew all the dirty jobs. Meanwhile, Sgt. Warden is not as squeaky clean as he puts on, as he's having a secret affair with Karen Holmes (Deborah Kerr), the wife of the company commander. Additionally, a heated rivalry develops between Angelo Maggio (Frank Sinatra) and Sgt. "Fatso" Judson (Ernest Borgnine), but these petty differences are reframed when the calendar reaches December 7, 1941.
