The Thornton School of Music at the University of Southern California holds an annual Concerto Competition to celebrate the fine soloists who are a part of the student body. Amongst the winners of the 2012 Competition was cellist Frédéric Rosselet. As his prize, he performed Lutosławski's Cello Concerto on March 14 2013. Principal Conductor Carl St. Clair conducted the Thornton Symphony. Frédéric particularly enjoyed performing with Maestro St. Clair because St. Clair served as assistant conductor under Seiji Ozawa at the Boston Symphony in 1987, when he and Rostropovich introduced the concerto to Boston audiences. Rostropovich gave the concerto its world première at a Royal Philharmonic Society concert on October 14th, 1970. Though played without pause, the work has four movements: an Introduction for solo cello, a cycle of Four Episodes (corresponding to the first movement of the traditional concerto plan), a slow Cantilena, and a Finale with coda. Bravi Frédéric and Carl, and congratulations to the wonderful musicians of Thornton Symphony for this spectacular performance.
