Franken Opposes Jeff Sessions For Attorney General-Full Speech

Sen. Franken posts: It is the obligation of elected officials to recognize injustice when they see it, and to stand in opposition to it. But time and time again, in hearings and in written responses to questions from me and my fellow members of the Senate Judiciary Committee, President Trump’s nominee for US Attorney General Jeff Sessions has demonstrated an inability to recognize injustice—whether it’s discrimination faced by LGBT people, discriminatory barriers to the ballot box, or violence against women. And if he can’t see injustice, what assurance do we have that Senator Sessions will act to stop it? Today, I took to the Senate floor because I believe the communities we represent should be confident that the nation’s top law enforcement officer is capable of recognizing the challenges that they face and will help them overcome those challenges. Americans deserve an attorney general who will acknowledge those challenges and take the steps necessary to address them, not turn a blind eye. I am not confident that Senator Sessions is. And I will be voting against him.
