Known locally as "Caeser's Camp" for unknown reasons, this was actually the site of a Norman castle. Little was known about it until 1878, when it was excavated by Augustus Pitt Rivers (a British Army officer noted for his innovations in archaeological methodology) in what is claimed to be the first scientific excavation of a medieval site in Britain. Evidence showed that there was a castle there as early as 1095 and that it was occupied for some time following the Norman invasion. There is also suggestion that this could have been the site of an earlier Iron Age fort, which makes sense given the strategic location of the natural earth formation. Now it's a spot favoured by dog walkers and the odd drone pilot, but make sure you pick a day with little-to-no wind as it was pretty blustery up there! The views of the coast and the Channel Tunnel terminal make the climb worth while.
