Fire at TC Roberson School

ASHEVILLE, N.C. -- Flames break out in a modular unit at TC Roberson High School, causing an evacuation of the school this morning. Officials say no one was inside the room in building when the fire broke out around 9am Monday morning, but principal Amy Rhoney says the four surrounding classrooms with about 100 kids had to be relocated indoors. Everyone at TC Roberson high was evacuated outside to the front of the school when the fire alarm went off. Asheville Fire Department responded along with Skyland Fire crews. Battalion Chief Michael Coggins says when they arrived, smoke was heavy. Battalion Chief Michael Coggins, "it was a lot of smoke, the fire was actually up in the attic and we had to make access. We cut a hole in the roof, we pulled ceiling, to find the fire...but a lot of smoke." Principal Amy Rhoney, "there were no students in the room when the fire started. It was in our clothing closet and that room remains locked unless an administrator or adult walks in with the student to get what they need." Principal Rhoney says the students cooperated very well and that no one was injured. All students returned to class by 10am. As for the students whose classes were relocated, they will remain inside the main school campus until officials advise them it's okay to return. The County Fire Marshall is investigating the cause of the fire.
