It's hard to imagine what it was like to see a Jazzmaster for the first time in 1958. Nowadays, we're so accustomed to seeing indie rock heroes like J Mascis, Lee Ranaldo, and Nels Cline shred on their Jazzmasters that it's easy to forget how bold and revolutionary the original design was. For instance, it was the first Fender to ever sport a rosewood fretboard! It was also the first guitar to sport an offset waist (which was supposed to improve ergonomics for jazz guitarists who played sitting down), and the first to feature dedicated “rhythm” and “lead” circuits for the neck pickup. Speaking of which, the Jazzmaster’s pickups were revolutionary in 1958, too, and players have loved the way they blend the punch and chime of P-90s with the bright, round sound of a great Telecaster’s bridge pickup ever since. Now, Fender pays homage to the Jazzmaster’s legacy of important firsts with the 60th Anniversary ’58 Jazzmaster. The 60th Anniversary ’58 Jazzmaster embodies the spirit of these revolutionary first Jazzmasters thanks to its vintage-correct appointments and stunning styling. First and foremost, the vintage-style “C”-shaped neck sits right at the Goldilocks sweet spot: not too thick, not too skinny. And when you pair a neck profile that feels that good with a vintage-correct 7.25” radius, you get the perfect vintage feel (rhythm players will especially love how easy it is to fly up and down this neck playing chords!). The vintage-style single-coil pickups have all the midrange density and bell-like chime of the best vintage Jazzmasters, and the rhythm/lead switch allows you to flip from warm to bright in an instant! But don’t get it twisted: this bad boy has style for miles, too, thanks to its anodized gold pickguard and knurled chrome control knobs. Because of all of these magnificent features, the Wildwood staff believes that these guitars are a fitting tribute to the first Jazzmasters of 1958, and we are excited to see what significant “firsts” they inspire our exceptional customers to achieve!
