Arthur L. Caplan, PhD is the Drs. William F and Virginia Connolly Mitty Professor and founding head of the Division of Bioethics at New York University Langone Medical Center. He was formerly the Sidney D. Caplan Professor of Bioethics at the Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania, where he created the Center for Bioethics and the Department of Medical Ethics. He has received many awards and honors, including the McGovern Medal of the American Medical Writers Association, the Franklin Award from the City of Philadelphia, and the Patricia Price Browne Prize in Biomedical Ethics. In 2014 he was selected to receive the Public Service Award from the National Science Foundation/National Science Board for substantial contributions to increasing public understanding of science and engineering in the United States. He has served on numerous highly influential national and international committees addressing bioethical issues. He is a highly published author, and appears frequently as a media guest and commentator. His most recent books are Contemporary Debates in Bioethics (Wiley 2013) and Ethics in Mental Healthcare: A Reader (MIT Press, 2013).
