In this Video I have the privilege of addressing you all from one of Bangalore’s last surviving natural forests. Yes, if you are surprised that there still is a forest, then you would be in for a treat. This place there I am in right now is called as #Turahalli Forest. The place is located off south #Bangalore in #Kanakpura road. It is about 13 kms from the prominent temple known as #Banashankari. Spreading over an area of 590 acres it is more than double in size of the popular garden of our city #Lalbagh. The forest is protected and managed by #Karnataka forest department. Old-timers of Bangalore will recollect Turahalli as a lovely forest, set with hillocks, where everyone went to for relaxation. Over a period of years, the pressure of population in Bangalore has meant that the once-pristine forest has been “developed” into various layouts. All that remains is just a couple of hillocks. #Cycling and #hiking are major activities within the precincts of this forest. Some people try their luck at rock climbing too. There are few rock climbing avenues with in the forest. There is a small #Saneeshwara temple at the top of a hill within the forest. Majority of the trees in the forest are #Eucalyptus, but however in the northern flanges of the forest there are some fig and #Jamoon trees too. A perennially flowering legume plant named Indigofera Karnatakana can be found in abundance. Torch tree, colloquially known as Gorave, also are present in the forest and during their summer blooms they spill out intense fragrance. A few species of animals have made this forest their home common among they are #Hares, #Jackals, #Lizards, and #Mongoose. Among birds the common ones are Horned #Owls, #Mynas and #Babblers. Turahalli is the last remaining wilderness space so close to South Bangalore…everyone in the adventure community, be it climbers, walkers, birdwatchers or cyclists, have a responsibility to keep the forests as they are, and leave minimum impact. Unfortunately of late there are incidents of poaching, encroachment etc. that have endangered this pristine natural forest. We each are indebted to save this forest from getting worse from hereon. Over the past few years, efforts have been made by nearby residents to clean up and to prevent further encroachment and dumping of waste in the forest. The #CleanupTurahalli group is attempting to remove waste disposed in the forest. Let us do our best to contribute directly and indirectly in saving this last natural forest of our beloved city. I earnestly hope you will make a visit to this pristine forest and learn more about it, bond with it, and contribute in saving it for posterity.
