Easy CNC Project Start to Finish | Sign Making with Inventables X-Carve

Carving signs is both straightforward and very satisfying. In this video I make a gift for a friend using the X-Carve CNC machine from Inventables. We take a photograph, trace outline of the Austin Mini Badge as a vector graphic and set-up the job in Easel Pro.

Once carved a simple painting technique brings the sign to life. A small problem with the gantry moving didn't really affect the result in the end. The lock motors feature in Easel doesn't really work properly and I will cover that in a separate video.
The Easel Pro software is a paid subscription and is what gives you the ability to v-carve. If that's something you expect to do all the time then the subscription is worth it, however you can get access to the features for a limited amount of time each month for free, and at the time of recording, a Easel Pro subscription is included with each new machine.
(I should add I bought my machine before that offer was available)

A sign is probably the most straightforward project for a CNC. A flat piece of MDF or Plywood is the ideal medium. 3d carving requires CAM software and in my case I use Easel from Inventables. The Easel Pro software is easy to use but alternative are available and a great source of advice in the UK is Ooznest who's Work Bee is a really good alternative to the x-carve. The graphic software I traced the Austin Mini Bonnet badge is call Affinity Designer and is available for both the Apple Mac and Microsoft Windows. A really good alternative to Adobe Illustrator. US viewers might find the Shapeoko 3 XL an alternative machine with good reviews.
