STORYLINE
Bern turned orange on Monday evening as Dutch fans, vastly outnumbering their Italian counterparts at the city's fanzone, celebrated wildly after Ruud van Nistelrooy and Wesley Sneijder scored to give the Netherlands a 2-0 halftime lead over Italy at the European Championship.
The atmosphere was festive as it had been all day, as fans could be seen bouncing up and down, chanting and dancing in the streets of the picturesque streets of the Swiss capital.
Supporters in the fanzone erupted when Van Nistelrooy, from what appeared to be a clear offside position, stuck out a leg to redirect a 26th-minute shot from the left past goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon.
The World Cup champions had no complaints about the second goal five minutes later.
Dirk Kuyt headed Giovanni van Bronckhorst's crossfield pass into the area and Sneijder hooked the ball passed Buffon at the near post.
The few Italian supporters in the fanzone clutched on to their flags and each other, as hopes of a positive result receded by the minute.
Still, they were cheered when in the 43rd when Buffon saved a low shot by Van Nistelrooy that would have made the score 3-0.
In Group C, Italy and the Netherlands also face France and Romania - that means at least one of the favourites will go out in the first round.
Italy is bidding to add the European title to the World Cup crown it won in Berlin two years ago.
However, the World Cup holders have lost dependable captain Fabio Cannavaro to injury.
Cannavaro's injury during a training session only six hours after the Italians touched down in Austria is a major blow.
Although Italy has a wealth of defensive talent, Cannavaro's influence on the field will be missed.
Meanwhile, Dutch coach Marco van Basten has plenty of talent in attack.
But the Dutch haven't won anything since the 1988 Euros, when Van Basten's spectacular angled volley in the final was the highlight, and they are notorious for failing to deliver at the big events.
