Malayalam writer and social critic Sukumar Azhikode, known as modern Kerala's most articulate orator, passed away at Amala hospital in Thrissur. He was 85. After being detected with bone cancer, Azhikode was admitted to the hospital on December 7. He was a bachelor. Born on May 12, 1926, Azhikode, a multi-faceted personality, retired as pro-vice chancellor of the University of Calicut in 1986. He had won 12 awards. He won the Padma Shree in 2007, but declined it stating that such honours were against the Constitution.
The most famous work of Azhikode, renowned as a true Gandhian, was Tatvamasi (Malayalam) published in 1984, which was praised as an authoritative book on Indian philosophy, Vedas and Upanishads.
