The replacement for the now almost decade old Ferrari California, the Portofino, is the most usable new Ferrari money can buy according to Ferrari, making this a 365 day a year car.
Let’s be honest, aesthetically, the outgoing Ferrari California T was not a pretty car. Its long nose and short overhangs, steeply raked roofline and over exaggerated rear end completely diminished its curb appeal. With the introduction of the Portofino, Ferrari has definitely addressed the California T’s lack of style and as such has succeeded in delivering a stunning looking modern GT.
The new car has more rear seat space, a bigger boot and more equipment than its predecessor as well as a starting price of £166,000. Theres also a much more efficient air conditioning system and a retractable hard top roof that can be lowered at speeds of up to 30mph, in just 14seconds.
The Portofino is lighter than the California T by 80kg and benefits from an all-new front-engined, rear drive chassis, which features new electric power steering and a third generation electronic differential.
The Portofino has a top speed of 199 mph, just one mile an hour shy of the magic 200 mark and thanks to a launch control system; it can hit 0-62mph in an eye popping 3.5 seconds. In its automatic setting, the Portofino works seamlessly between gears and doesn’t jump to up shift unless sufficient throttle input is detected. A long drive confirmed to me the Portofino is a true GT. With the top down and windows up, the wind buffeting is absolutely minimal, whilst the ergonomic, highly comfortable seats make light of the journey.
The adaptive suspension allows independent softening of the dampers and irons out the worst of any road imperfections. Tecchy goodies include: heated 18-way adjustable seats, Apple Car Play, a premium JBL audio system and front and rear cameras.
The £166k price tag might sound like an awful lot of money, but when you consider how well equipped it is as standard, and how much quicker it is than its nearest front-engined rival, it actually stacks up against the competition very well indeed.
This consequently has reflected in good sales and at the moment the waiting list is already very long and growing. If you order a Portofino today, you’d do very well to take delivery of it by this time next year!
