Donald Trump has angered a lot of people on social media due to comments he made about the NFL and National Anthem protesters at a rally in Huntsville, Alabama on Friday September 22, 2017. The main point he made was about how disrespectful it is for athletes to kneel during the national anthem and that people should boycott if they didn’t like it. Where the controversy really arose is when he labelled the anthem protesters as “sons of b******” that should be fired. His language was abrasive but the crowd responded in a positive way, with applause and chants of “USA, USA, USA.”
Social media was quick to react. Not just normal, everyday people reacted… but also some top level athletes (mostly from the NBA, not much from NFL) and Roger Goodell, the commissioner of the NFL. NBA athletes reacted due to a follow-up tweet to the rally sent out by Donald Trump’s account that rescinded the invitation sent to Steph Curry for a White House visit, due to Curry waffling on going. LeBron James, Baron Davis, Kobe Bryant, and others responded negatively to the tweet. Many Kaepernick supporters in general on Twitter reacted negatively to not only the aforementioned tweet, but of course the speech in Huntsville as well. Which is strange because they did not want Curry to go and they are boycotting the NFL. So it seems like they’d be on Trump’s side since he wants the same thing they want in those two respects?
Donald Trump’s words may have been harsh but at the end of the day, many American people feel like he does. They don’t appreciate millionaire athletes who wine and cry like babies on the football field over social issues that aren’t even really real. Politics and sports should not be intertwined especially when the politics are crocks from the far left. Most of the NFL’s fanbase is conservative. Leftist politics with a right-leaning audience of sports do not mix. Ratings for the NFL are down and it can most likely be pinned on the pre-game National Anthem protests from players turning people off from the game.
