Dixie Summit ski area is also known as the Dixie Butte Rope Tow, located on Dixie Pass, about 9 miles east of Prairie City on highway 26. This is east of the town of John Day in Grant County. Dixie doesn't have its own web site, but you can find info about it on Facebook, on the Greater Grant County FB page. There is only a rope tow, and quite an "advanced" one, meaning that it gets fairly steep near the top. You don't get a physical lift ticket, but everyone is supposed to register in the small lodge and pay $5 per day. Both the rope tow and the cabin were originally located at the Starr Ridge ski hill between Jon Day and Seneca on highway 395. That's why the sign on the cabin still says "Starr Ridge". But this happened some decades ago. The cabin was filmed in a 1972 film called "Napoleon and Samantha" with Johnny Whitaker and Jodie Foster. Most of the movie was filmed in and around John Day, including some scenes at Dixie Pass. The film crew moved the cabin closer to the highway. After the filming, the crew relocated the cabin to the present location about a quarter of a mile higher up on the hill.
