Welcome to Harry's World of Words and Phrases and English in a Minute. We're going to continue with English grammar and in particular the tenses and we're now going to compare Present Continuous with the Present Simple and and how we use them. They have similarities they both talk about the present but we use them differently. So Present Continuous as I've said previously is about something that is happening now: I am walking, I am talking I am listening. I'm talking to you now by video - Present Continuous. Present Simple we use when something happens as a habitual action. Meaning a habit. Something we do every day, something that is regular: I get up at 8 o'clock every day. I go to work at 9 o'clock every day. I come home at 5 o'clock every day. I eat my dinner at 6 o'clock every day. Habit. Okay. So Present Continuous and Present Simple. Now there are some verbs that we can only use in the simple format and these are often verbs connected with feelings and love, hate, like. And then also verbs like understand and think. So you don't say I am understanding you or I am liking you or I'm hating you. I like. I hate. I understand. Of course unless you are McDonald's when they say I am loving it. But that's one of those exceptions.
