Ego or self-importance may have a certain negative connotation to it but it is a necessary ingredient for a successful living, particularly when it is leveraged properly. However, ego becomes a problem if it is not channelized properly and begins producing negative thoughts and emotions. Ego comes into the picture when your mind is in disagreement with others' point of view and you believe that your point of view is the only correct view. It is also particularly aggressive when things do not go the way you want them to. This non-acceptance results in negative emotions like anger, resentment and self- doubt. These negative emotions fuel the false ego. It is not other people's words or actions that determine your emotions, but your response that determines the quality of your emotions.
When you become consciously aware that ego is becoming an obstacle to your living and resulting in undesired emotions that you don't want, you can easily take control of it. Ego is your attitude towards life. You can not drop it but you can certainly transform it through mindfulness and awareness.
