Dev Patel hopes that the colourblind casting of his new film will allow children from backgrounds like his own to see themselves represented on screen.
The 29-year-old, whose Gujarati-Indian parents emigrated to the UK from Kenya, stars as David Copperfield in a new adaptation of Charles Dickens’ classic novel from director Armando Iannucci. The role has previously only been played by white actors.
Patel, who grew up in Rayners Lane, said that he felt alienated by period dramas on film and television when he was younger, but believes his new film is more “relatable” as it reflects a “multi-cultural and rich” London.
“I didn’t know about this story because old iterations of it would alienate someone like me from watching it as a young child,” he told the Standard.
