Datsun 240Z L28 stroker #4 – Round Top SU carbs part 2 This video is the second part to the discussion of the round top SU carbs on my Datsun. DEVELOPMENT The carbs currently run SM needles. I have dyno’d the car (video listed in cards) with SM needles with the fuel float levels set to factory. The top end AFR was leaning out to around 14.5:1. Since then I have trialed RV and RU needles in an attempt to correct top end AFR. The needles corrected top end but richened low to mid rev range beyond practicality. I reinstalled the SM needles with the fuel floats set to increase the fuel level in the bowls (video of power run in cards). This brought the top end AFR down to around 13.5:1. AFR data logging charts are taken from Innovate Motorsport’s Logworks software. Departures from factory manual during assembly and set up: + Both fuel floats set the same level + Needles set in suction piston against nozzle with idle mixture nuts zero turns I use the synchrometer to set idle synchronisation between the carbs and the Uni-Sync for high speed synchronisation. Getting the AFR correct for the engine is primarily driven by needle selection and band aid fixes (adjusting fuel float levels, adding more turns to the idle mixture nuts) have minor effects.
