Dark Souls 2: The Rotten Boss Guide | How to Defeat the Rotten (NG+++)

Welcome to Dark Souls 2! ATTENTION: All my Dark Souls 2 videos are for helping purposes and learning where to find certain items. I do not in any way claim to be good at this game, nor do I think I'm very good. So please steer clear of pointing out flaws in my combat. This is a boss guide for the Rotten. He's located in Black Gulch. This is one of the fights that you can summon Lucatiel for. Read below for more info on her. On NG+ he will drop the Old Dead One Soul, which might be a reference to Nito from Dark Souls. Could the Rotten be a reincarnated version of Nito? To get Lucatiel's summon sign, you need to drop down to a ledge (not the ledge that leads to Darkdiver Grandahl and the two giants) and talk to her in the cave. After doing that, her summon sign will appear by the second bonfire. ================================================ Area: Black Gulch Location: Near the second bonfire The Rotten's moveset (move names from Dark Souls 2 wiki, link below): ● Light Vertical Cleaver: The Rotten will smash his cleaver down in the ground twice and then finish the combo with a horizontal swing. Roll to the side right before his cleaver hits you to avoid the whole combo. It is possible to block some of the attacks, but it isn't recommended. ● Hard Vertical Cleaver: The Rotten will raise his cleaver in the air and slam it in the ground in front of you. It tracks pretty good, so don't roll too soon or too quick. The Rotten launches forward when the cleaver is about to hit the ground, making it very difficult to roll backwards to avoid getting hit. Therefore, I strongly recommend rolling to the side right before the cleaver hits the ground to dodge the attack. ● Horizontal Cleaver: The Rotten will swing his cleaver in a horizontal motion. Either roll towards the swing or with the swing to dodge the attack. Don't roll too soon or too quick, as always. ● Fist Smash: The Rotten will smash his fist in the ground. Roll either backwards or to one of the sides, just before his fist hits you, to avoid getting hit. ● Fist Grab: The Rotten will attempt to grab you and twist you with his hands. If it connects, it will massive damage so I strongly recommend dodging the attack. To avoid being grabbed, simply roll with the swing and he won't be able to grab you. Again, rolling too soon or too quick will make you fail to avoid the attack. ● Oil Vomit: The Rotten will puke out oil on you. If he hits you with the oil, you will be soaked in oil. Should you walk over the burning areas when you're soaked in oil, you'll end up combusting and get knocked down. It works similiar to the oil that's being thrown at you in No Man's Wharf. The attack however has piss poor range, so avoiding it shouldn't be a problem. Roll backwards just to be safe though. AFTER 50% health or lower ● Dark Energy Explosion: The Rotten will sort of lean forward while preparing to use the attack. A dark aura will appear around him when he's preparing to use it. Roll backwards a few times to get out of range. Should you be in an attacking animation when he's starting to use it, try to block some of the damage if you don't have enough time to roll away. ● Dark Energy Cleaver Wave: The Rotten will raise his cleaver in the air, similiar to the Hard Vertical Cleaver attack, charge his cleaver with dark damage and slam it in the ground. It creates a beam of dark energy that hits pretty hard if it connects. He'll only use this if you're very far away from him. Roll to the side right before the beam is about to hit you to avoid getting hit. Anything you feel like I left out or anything you would like to add?
