DENNIS - The owner of a barn on a cranberry bog at 154 Whig Street drove to Dennis Station 2 to report that his barn was on fire around 3:35 p.m. Friday. The barn sits on the edge of a cranberry bog about 1,000 feet off Whig Street near Scarsdale Road. Dennis firefighters arriving on scene found flames through the roof of the approximately 30-year-old structure constructed of white pine. A brisk northwest wind racing across the cranberry bog fanned the flames. The property is set back off the road and the initial Dennis Fire truck had to lay out one thousand feet of 4-inch hose from the hydrant to the building to extinguish the fire. A Yarmouth Fire Department engine pumped water from the hydrant to the Dennis truck at the scene. It took about twenty minutes to extinguish the fire. The Dennis Fire Department reports that a family cat perished in the fire. No injuries were reported. Brewster and Yarmouth Fire Departments assisted at the fire with Harwich providing station coverage. Whig Street was closed to through traffic until the scene could be cleared. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
