In 2006 he was injured by an improvised explosive device, losing his left leg, the toes on his right foot and two fingertips on his left hand. He actively promotes the use of athletics as the means for support and activity to other injured Veterans through his work as the director of VETSports, a non-profit he co-founded. The Department of Veterans Affairs offers adaptive sports, art therapy and recreation programs to help Veterans re-define their capabilities, establish rehabilitative goals, and discover their potential in a therapeutic environment. Through each step, Veterans find increased confidence, self-esteem, independence, and a higher quality of life.
