From an airing of the COLUMBO episode "Any Old Port In A Storm", which aired under the station's Big Apple Movie banner, as did a lot of the NBC-era COLUMBO episodes during that time, pretty much all of which have been kept on file since the day they were recorded. Almost all were recorded in SLP mode, this being the only exception. Seven years earlier, WNYW had been one of the Metromedia TV stations purchased by Rupert Murdoch, owner of 20th Century-Fox via the News Corporation, with the intent of making channel 5 the flagship station of the new Fox TV network. (WNYW had been known as WNEW-TV at the time of the purchase.) However, a quarter-century earlier, channel 5 had been WABD, the flagship of America's original fourth TV network, DuMont. WABD got its name from DuMont Laboratories founder Allen B. DuMont, who launched it in 1944. More information on this can be found from Clarke Ingram, via http://www.dumontnetwork.com/.
