Since I know my dad is very hard to understand, especially over the phone, I have typed out the dialogue below!
Me: Alright, so it's Nov. 6th 2012, election day, hoping Obama wins tonight. I'm about to call my dad and I'm about to come out to him...so...we'll see how this goes.
Dad: Hello
Me: What are you doing?
Dad: Watching a movie.
Me: Watching a movie?
Dad: Yeah.
Me: What movie?
Dad: (I have no idea what he said)
Me: (Again) What movie?
Dad: (Still have no idea what he said)
Me: hmmm
Dad: Why? What's the verdict?
Me: I don't know yet
Dad: Oh, you don't know the verdict on the election?
Me: No
Dad: See how you are. So what's up?
Me: Oh not too much, just..uh..you know.
Dad: Do what?
Me: Not too much. Went and voted today.
Dad: Do what?
Me: Went and voted today.
Dad: Oh, I thought you said you got married today
Me: Not quite....
Dad: Not quite (laughs) Oh, well your nephew was down here a while ago.
Me: Oh yeah?
Dad: Yup, he loves the outdoors
Me: That's good
Dad: uh huh....what's up? Huh?
Me: Well...umm...I kind of had something I was going to talk to you about
Dad: Well speak
Me: Well, are you going to love me no matter what?
Dad: I guess, why?
Me: well, so umm... well you know I've always tried to do everything I could to make you proud, you know?
Dad: uh huh
Me: and ummm... I hope what I'm about to tell you doesn't change that.....umm
Dad: Spit it out
Me: Well....I'm gay and I always have been and I've always felt this way and I've always known, and I mean, I just think it's time you know that you knew, and you know you deserve to know and I don't really expect you to really understand and I know it'll take time to get used to, but...you know, I can't live for anyone else and have to do what's going to make me happy.......So....
Dad: Okay.
Me: So do you still love me?
Dad: hmmmm.
Me: hmmm?
Dad: I guess
Me. You guess?
Dad: mhmm
Me: What are you thinking?
Dad: I don't know, I haven't had time to think.
Me: Are you surprised?
Dad: No, not really
Me: Really?
Dad: Really
Me: Oh........well I guess that's good.......................Are you alright?
Dad: Yeah.....just need time to think things over......alright? It's okay.
Me: Okay...You're sure?
Dad: Huh? Yeah........well I'm watching this movie and worried about the election.
Me: Me too, obviously. I didn't sleep at all last night.
Dad: See how you are.
Me: But yeah, ummm...if you would, I'd like to tell Darrick (My brother) on my own, so if you wouldn't say anything to him
Dad: Okay, I won't.....it doesn't matter, I'll probably keep it to myself. Okay.
Me: Alright.
Dad: That's fair enough.
Me: Alright, you're going to be alright?
Dad: Alright, love you, I'm gonna go.
Me: Huh?
Dad: I said okay, love you.
Me: Love you too
Dad: Bye
Me: Bye.........OH GOD!
On election day, I decided to come out to my dad. 5 minutes after hanging up the phone, I found out that Obama won the re-election and that a leader in support of equality would remain in office. Truly an amazing day that I will never forget.
