DENVER - Estes Park climber, Tommy Caldwell, and his climbing partner, Kevin Jorgeson, of California, are free climbing Yosemite National Park's El Capitan. According to abc7news.com, Caldwell and Jorgeson are the first to free climb the Dawn Wall using ropes only as a safeguard against fall. ABC News said the Dawn Wall is one of roughly 100 routes to the top. The Dawn Wall is considered the hardest and steepest. It faces east, toward the rising sun. "El Capitan is a favorite for experienced rock climbers," according to the Yosemite National Park website. "Rising more than 3,000 feet above the Valley floor, it is the largest monolith of granite in the world." Caldwell and Jorgeson practiced for weeks, then started their two week climb on December 27, according to Caldwell's Facebook page. "We climbed the first five pitches feeling a bit nervous but things went well and we worked out the jitters a bit," Caldwell wrote on day two. After completing pitches six to nine he wrote, "Winter conditions are feeling awesome." Day three, they tackled pitch 10. There are 32 sections of the climb, the Denver Post reported.
