The death of Iran’s top general, a man who spread violence and terror across the Middle East, brought with it grief and anger in Tehran.
Now on the precipice of war, Iran’s regime is grappling with growing dissatisfaction with its leadership, crippling economic sanctions, and an unpredictable US President.
Iran is divided, but its internal strife as well as its fractious relationship with America has been decades in the making. A long history of US interventionism gave rise to the fundamentalist regime now in power. Many in Iran want change, but so too does America’s role in Iran’s past cast a long shadow over it today.
