A PLAN 039A Yuan-class SSK (sometimes refered as "Type 041") from the South Sea Fleet spotted doing maneuvres close to shore.
The Yuan-Class is the most advanced Chinese conventional submarine to date. It is equipped with air-independent propulsion for prolonged submersed cruising and modern chinese wake-homing or active/passive torpedoes and sub-launched anti-ship cruise missiles.
The hull design is an enlarged tear-drop shaped configuration inspired from the Russian Kilo-class submarine, which are also in PLAN service by a dozen, renowned for its stealth and quietness (termed as 'black hole' by US intelligence for its absolute silence) and an indigenous sail design, that reminds of the earlier Song-class SSK - which gained prominence by surfacing within an US carrier-strike group in 2007 during an US military excercise, without being detected before.
With this, the Yuan-class seems to be the product of the combination of two very capable designs - the Song and the Kilo, which gives the chinese submarine forces a world-class conventional platform, suitable for defending the littorals even beyond the first island chain from enemy intrusions.
currently, there are 7 Yuan's completed, adding much needed capability to the ever-growing Chinese conventional submarine force of 12 Kilo's and 16 Song's and more than 30 older Ming-class SSK's...
The song in the background is apparently the official chinese submariner theme, sung by the brave men and women serving in the different conventional submarines of the PLAN.
There's also a dedicated song for the nuclear submariners of the PLAN too, btw:
