My first Cascade event ride since moving to the Seattle area was Chilly Hilly 2018. It was the day before my birthday, so I used the ride as a special gift to myself.
With over 15 (?) hills to climb and over 2,100 feet (660 m) of elevation gain over the 32.4 mile (52.4 km) route, it's a challenging yet fun ride around Bainbridge Island in the latter half of winter. The temperatures were in the low 40's with wind chills in the high 30's, but the hill climbs warm one up enough to more than just break a sweat.
It is estimated that at least 2,700 cyclists took on Chilly Hilly.
I had a good time even though I unfortunately got a flat early on in the ride. Also, at the end there was a chili feed, and the chili was well worth the ride (it disappeared from my bowl almost as soon as it was filled!). I rode the 8:55 ferry from Seattle to get to the start of the ride on Bainbridge Island.
The toughest hill was Baker Hill which took me over 6 minutes to climb. I hope that portion of this video shows how brutal it truly was!
As a member, I look forward to more major rides with Cascade Bicycle Club!
