Sunday evening, 13 July 2008, passengers in the rear of the #147 bus running northbound on Lake Shore Drive noticed smoke beginning to enter the bus from beneath the last row of seats (which covers part of the engine). After shouting to gain the driver's attention, telling him to stop, the bus pulled over on the bridge above Montrose Drive. The rear then filled with thick smoke as the passengers tried exit calmly. One woman was treated for minor smoke inhalation, but there were no other injuries. Chicago Fire Department arrived on the scene shortly after to extinguish the fire, which was limited to the engine, in the rear of the bus. I was in seated in one of the five seats covering the engine in the rear. In the video you can see the driver run back onto the bus to apparently turn off the lights. Seemed a bit unnecessary. I boarded the bus with my parents at Michigan & Randolph. We jogged to catch it and unknowingly stepped in front of a gentleman that was waiting at the stop. I immediately realized, apologized, and offered him a place ahead of us in the line to board. After thinking about it he replies, "Uhh.. I think I'll catch the next one." Good choice, sir.
