On Saturday 15th September 2018 I headed to the Zocalo in Mexico City to join the locals in celebrating El Grito, the beginning of the Mexican Independence celebrations. The Zocalo was full of people, music and at 11pm Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto appeared on the balcony of the Palace to chant 'Viva Mexico!' and ring the bell, to mirror what occured in Dolores in 1810 by Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, to signal the beginning of the Mexican War of Independence. I had an awesome time! It was great to be experience such celebrations as a foreigner and I felt very priveleged to be able to be there!
