Catherine Palace & Faberge Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia

We have 72 hours of visa free time in Russia and want to make the most of it! From St. Petersburg we take a Yandex taxi (Russian Uber) about 30km south to a city called Pushkin also known as Tsarskoye Selo. It's most famous for the Catherine Palace, which was once the Imperial residence of the Romanovs, the Russian royal family. It's also called the Summer Palace because they lived there in the summer. The name 'Catherine Palace' comes from Catherine who was the wife of Peter the Great (who St. Petersburg is named after). Catherine and Peter's daughter, Elizabeth, built the Catherine Palace in honour of her mother and the bright blue colour pays tribute to Catherine's bright blue eyes. The palace is enormous and opulent and it's easy to imagine the Russian royal family feeling comfortable here. After the palace we take another Yandex back to St. Petersburg to another place with a royal connection: the Fabergé Museum. It's home to nine Imperial Fabergé eggs - the second largest collection in the world - including the first and last eggs. These eggs are world famous for good reason. They were given as Easter gifts amongst the Russian royals and each egg is made of precious materials and took one year to make. The craftsmanship and expense is unbelievable. We are in total awe.
