- Composer: Carl [Charles] Antoon Smulders (8 mei 1863 -- 21 april 1934) - Orchestra: Netherlands Radio Symphony Orchestra - Conductor: Kees Bakels - Soloist: Ivo Janssen - Year of recording: 1994 Piano Concerto in A minor, written in 1886. 00:00 - I. Moderato 10:27 - II. Adagio 17:19 - III. Allegro scherzando/molto This romantic piano concerto by Dutch composer Smulders is written in the traditional 'romantic concerto' style, and could be considered one of the best piano concertos from the Netherlands. Fellow Dutch composer Alphons Diepenbrock described the concerto 'like sun dawn', and wrote that the composition had 'the absolute character of authenticity'. In Smulders' composition a clear influence from the César Franck school can be seen, and a kinship to the music of Edvard Grieg is apparent [compare to Grieg's Piano Concerto in A minor, uploaded on this channel]. The concerto is dedicated: "à mon maitre J.-Th [Jean-Théodore] Radoux". Radoux was director of the Liège Conservatoire, and considered Smulders as his special, very talented pupil. My apologies again for the bad score quality, I had to use scans made from a microfilm for this upload.
