Cape Foulwind New Zealand

We drove out to Cape Foulwind and stopped to watch the birds in the area. As I opened the camper door, a curious bird nearly hopped up into it. This was a weka and the New Zealanders call them "cheeky" (their word for a bit on the 'devil-may-care' side). I found them charming, intelligent, and very inquisitive. These are flightless birds, but they're not the least bit fearful of humans. There were several females seals and young pups on the rocks below and we watched for quite awhile before continuing the hike partway up the mountain, where we discovered a sign pointing in many directions with the kilometers to each of the major cities. New York is closer to NZ than London, which is almost exactly half way around the world from NZ. For a full description, see the travel section of www.joorl.com
